Is Your Congress Rep a Hero or a Putz?

I'm fed up with this stupid government and the idiots who are playing fast and furious with WE THE PEOPLE'S MONEY. Yeah, it belongs to us and they are supposed to answer to us...those heinous people like Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Warren, Biden.

HEAR THIS...I am sick and tired of all of you and want you all to QUIT and GO HOME.
P.S. Leave the money. It doesn't belong to you and if you take it, you're a thief.

Congressional Representative Randy Forbes represents the 4th District of Virginia and has written the Chief Administrator of the House of Representatives to request that his salary be withheld. Further, he has cosponsored H.R. 3160, the Government Shutdown Fairness Act, which would withhold all Members of Congress' salaries until the impasse has ended. He also request that Congressional paychecks be reduced by the number of days the government is shut down.

Rep. Forbes has voted against Member pay increases and also introduced H.R. 284, the Congressional Accountability Pay (CAP) Act. This would make Congress members personally accountable for overspending and would tie their salaries to grown in government spending. IOW, the more the federal government spends, the less Congressional members earn.

WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Forbes has supported legislation that would require the President, the Vice President and all political appointees to join Congress and all staff in obtaining health insurance through health care exchanges and eliminate any employer contribution to health insurance purchases. No opt out!

Nonessential employees in Mr. Forbes' office have been furloughed but essential employees are on site to ensure constituents have a voice in the process. IOW, his phones are being answered and he's fighting for the people of Virginia's 4th District.

Boring and Bummed Out

No problem admitting this...I am a boring woman. I tend to stay on the farm, doing things that need doing in order to (right now) put the farm and house to bed for the winter. Today was a good day, mostly, but I am so bummed out. More to come on that later; right now, I'm talking about Quikrete and the places in the limestone foundation that, over the years, have crumbled and fallen out. 

 I've never used Quikrete before so it's new to me but, hey, I bake so how hard can it be, right? -grin- Quikrete comes in 40 or 80 pound bags but, of course, the feed store only had 80 pound bags. Oh boy. I'm sure to regret this tomorrow, my shoulders and back are already getting tight and, around here, the only help I have are the dogs and they don't carry. The "recipe" calls for 80 pounds of Quikrete and 6 quarts of water but there was no way I could make up that much and use it before it hardened. So, I mixed it up, small amounts at a time so I could take a bit longer packing it into the foundation. I haven't a clue how much Quikrete I used nor how much water I used but I mixed it until it looked ready to use. 

Some of the places that needed mortar were huge and I cannot believe it's taken us me this long to figure out...duh...Quikrete! It's a fast acting concrete and it can be colored but not by me. Frankly, I think I'm brilliant for having gotten this far. snicker...

This was the largest place that needed patching and, I'm pretty sure a professional would say, "Um, not such a great job." Frankly, it looks great to me! It's already hardened and I'm hopeful it's going to last a long time. Or, until I sell the farm and move, which ever comes first. It should help with the heating bills this winter...hallelujah!

This side of the house is the side that gets the worst weather; it also had the most places to patch. There are a few more places, opposite side of the house, but it can wait until later this week.

 Donald, Mary's husband, came over Saturday and picked up my lawn mower to sharpen the blades and do some other stuff. Today, he came back, repaired lawn mower on his trailer and, while he was here, he put together my John Deere wagon. This wagon was a fabulous thrift store purchase and now, totally able to be used since Donald put it together. Yay, Donald!

I helped but not enough to brag about.

 Finished! Doesn't it look fabulous? It's heavy and, using the handlebar, can be either pushed or pulled, or attached to a hitched and towed behind my Polaris Ranger or JD lawn mower...suweeet! 

On Saturday, I bought this iron wood rack; paid a whooping $20 for it and think it'll hold a week to two weeks worth of wood. It's going to be so nice, having the wood up off the porch! Donald delivered it and we set it on the back porch. Now, to get it filled with wood so I'm ready for the first snow storm. 

 Now for the bummed part...the circle is where my dusk to dawn light used to be. For some reason, it stopped working so was removed and taken to Lowe's where they said, "Okay, we'll replace it." For the record, let me state how much I enjoy dealing with Lowe's. The staff is almost always helpful, generally knows what they're doing and, whenever I've had to return stuff, they work with me to a satisfactory end. Thanks, Lowe's!

Big, strong, handsome Lowe's man says he thinks the sensor button went out and was going to replace the button. Then, big, strong, handsome Lowe's mans' boss said, "Naw, let's just replace the whole thing." Yahooooo!

Today, I decided to put up the dusk to dawn light but, having never messed with electricity...too frightened...I made a basic mistake. I didn't throw the break box so when I touched the black wire...shivver me timbers! It lit up my little world. Fortunately, it was a little light up so I didn't fall, nor jump, off the ladder. Thank You, God.

I turned off the breaker, connected all the wires...white to white, black to black, ground to ground and screwed the light to the building. I sat on the back porch until dusk, waiting for that dang light to come on but nooooooooo. Didn't happen. I want to cry. It's still dark, the light isn't working and tomorrow, I'm going to try again. Hopefully, it'll be something simple, like a crimped wire. If not, I haven't a clue what I'm going to do. I'm boring and bummed out. Totally.

Knitting as Therapy

It's that time of year when the needles are covered in yarn and a lot of flat surfaces have piles of knitted hats, scarves, cowls, fingerless mitts, etc. There are two little girls and four little boys in the valley and hats have been made for all of them. I'll make more hats, for the other children and folks in my life, before giving the remainder to someone who can put them in the hands of others who need a bit of warmth and prayer in their lives.

The hats are knitted on circular, round needles and finished on double pointed needles (dpn). Those dpn's take a little getting used to but the best way I've found to finish a hat. 

The blaze orange makes the little boys happy and, for some of them, keeps them warm while they are hunting with their Dad's.

Kollage Yarns make a square knitting needles which is, surprisingly, easy on my hands and the yarn doesn't slip off the needles...at least not as easily as round needles. Kollage Yarns also has a yarn made with 80% milk 20% cotton; I'd love to give that a try!

The brownish yarn is some Lion Brand Homespun given to me by my sister. She hated the dark color, found it difficult to see but, for years, I've used OTT lights that make all the difference in the world in my ability to see true colors. 

Even with the rainy weather and the sprained hands, a little bit of knitting is getting accomplished. Beats housework or mucking the stable any day of the week, eh?

A Bowl of Warm, Homey Goodness

Today is the Autumn Equinox and it's chilly, raining and, in one word, miserable. Daddy always says the weather we have on the season's change, will be the predominate weather for that season. 

yay.

Cold, rain and misery for the next three months. And, if what I heard might even be true, snow flurries tomorrow.

Oh joy. 

 The weather report for this past week said, 10% change of rain on Monday and clear the rest of the week. 
Where, I wonder?
"Cause it wasn't here. It rained every single solitary day. A lot. My laundry went through several rinse cycles...sometimes the same day. 

Yep, it's true.

I'm sure some of the neighbors were talking. 

 Sometime during this past week, I stood at the open door of the refrigerator. As usual, I was waiting for food to jump enthusiastically into my arms, already prepared, hot and ready to eat. 

didn't happen.

What I did see were some of the raw vegetables left over from Daddy's birthday party.

Hmmm. 

Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, some onions to be rescued from the pantry, a package of bratwurst to be thawed, home made croutons and a box of chicken stock. 

Possibilities, all.

So, the vegetables were put into a roasting pan, cracked sea salt and black pepper added along with a couple of tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and put into a 350 degree oven for a couple of hours. While those vegetables were roasting, a pan was placed on the stove top, heat turned on and when the pan was hot, a tablespoon of EVOO pour inside.

Then, a couple of large onions were put into a pan to sweat and brown; when they were ready, they were removed and the sliced sausage put in to brown.

When the roasting was finished, everything was put into the stock pan with a quart of chicken stock (store bought because I'd run out of home made) and cooked for about 30 minutes. The heat was then turned off and everything sat for a while before I added the home made croutons and ate. 

This meal was, in a word...delicious. Seriously, this was one of the best soups I've ever made and, I think, due to the roasting of the vegetables beforehand. I'd contemplated cutting those cherry tomatoes in half but leaving them whole was the best decision. Each time I bit into a tomato, that sweetness would burst and was the perfect touch against the meatiness of the sausage, the richness of the chicken stock, the bite of the carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. I thought about making bread...white, bird seed or cornbread, even crackers...but decided it was beyond my reach. 

Maybe tomorrow. 

Maybe not. 

My hand still hurts and that seems to be a really good excuse to do not as much lately.

Does anyone know the name of this pattern? The back says KS Benchmark 1984 or 1884, but I can't tell which year. I've been using this flatware for forty years but, along the way, a few pieces have gone missing and I'd like to replace them. Can you help?

Happy 85th Birthday, Daddy

 Daddy, center, celebrated his 85th birthday this weekend and we gave him a surprise party. There were a couple of big surprises...the first was Dustin, his youngest grandson (right of Daddy) who flew in from Florida. This photo shows his brother, JW, to Dustin's right, and Steve, Daddy's only son and on his left.

 Mr. Green, Daddy's right, was in the same high school graduating class as Daddy. He told a couple of good stories about Daddy, then Daddy told him a couple of good stories about Mr. Green. Can you imagine being 85 years old and celebrating your birthday with a high school class mate? Their high school has a reunion every July and 4 classmates are still attending.

Mom and Daddy celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary next month.

 Stephanie had a surprise for Daddy and Dustin...the county fair was about 1/4 mile away and this 'copter pilot was selling rides. Daddy and Dustin went for a 7 minute ride...exciting and memorable for both.

It was a great weekend, filled with good food and friends who relieved old memories, made new memories and enjoyed the day and themselves. The only down side was I took a tumble and sprained my left hand so typing (and most everything else) is terribly painful right now. All that to say, it's going to be a while before I'm able to visit your blog or post on my blog. In the meantime, y'all take care, keep me in your prayers and have a good week...or two.

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture...I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. (OH PLEASE NO!) In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors,I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this On their bed.

P. S. Actually, weaving around my feet worked Very Well! I took a tumble but no bones broken, thank God! and no thanks to the felines...grrrrrr!

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was... Not working according to plan.

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still LODGED between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event, however, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and he speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my activities. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...
