Slow Poke Time

The Slow Living post resounded with some of you; it seems we all have a need to slow down, even those of us whose lives are already out of step, seemingly, with the rest of this ole world. Our steps, Dave and I, are in step with the natural world and that lends a measure of roundness, fullness and sweetness to our lives that a lot of people may never know. We live our lives by the seasons, enjoying each as they come and, generally, are patient for the next appointed time. Even as full as this winter has been, we've enjoyed the weather and have prepared for it as best we could. We've been snowed in on the farm for a couple of weeks at a time, have managed to escape now and again and are now safely ensconced a few hours away.

Dave and I have an older Acer laptop that doesn't have photo download capability; this is such a shame because the blizzard photos are incredible, especially here at the Greenbrier. We've come to the Greenbrier Clinic for a physical for me and find having one location to complete all those pesky tests is far better than driving to first one doctor, then another and to yet another for some other test. Under one roof everything is accomplished and all in a period of about a day and half. If only medicine could be the same across country, just think of the time, energy and emotional expenditure that could be saved! Even so, not all tests can be done here and I'll have to go to another facility in a couple of weeks.

As much as I'd like to worry, it's such a waste of time. My times are in God's, quite capable, hands and I'm doing what I need to do in order to maintain this body, a temple for His Holy Spirit. That sounds so strange and mystical to me...my body a temple. Sometimes, I'm sorry to say, I treat it more like a tent and, as time comes to us all in some degree or other, we are called upon to account for our treatment of our bodies.

But, what better place to have a doctor visit than at this lovely Greenbrier. Since 1778 the Greenbrier has been welcoming guests from around the world. This area, as much of West Virginia, is known for it's healing waters, in this case, sulphur waters. In times past, humans and animals alike would visit to drink and relax in the warm, healing waters and many have attributed cures from arthritis and other ailments. Folks still come for the sulphur waters but also for the world class golf course, restaurants and other wonderful attractions.

I've learned so much while here...Dorothy Draper designed and decorated this beautiful resort in a period of eighteen months! I have loved wandering around this period building, still dressed as Miss Draper left it, her signature flowers of rhododendrons and roses, the carpets, window dressings, furniture and accessories in  colors of green, blue, yellow, red and pink. Trust me, when we're able to return home and I download some photos, you'll be amazed!

There's a long hallway where photos from early days showcase Princess Grace, Prince Rainier, many men who went on to be President -Clinton, Bush Sr. and Jr., JFK...the list goes on. President Eisenhower was the last sitting President to actually stay at the Greenbrier and since, Presidents have not stayed here due to the threat of terrorism. The Greenbrier is a national treasurer and best to keep it safe. James C. Justice II just had an old fashioned "shoot-out" with the Marriott chain in both their quest to own the Greenbrier. I'm happy to say, Mr. Justice won, and now holds title as Chairman and CEO. That means a lot to me as Mr. Justice is a WV boy and heritage, tradition and the like is important to him. It's more than money although money is important; money is what makes the Greenbrier, indeed any business, stay in business and I wish Mr. Justice and his company a hundred successful years as owners of the Greenbrier. Yes, it's true his white hat has a few smudges but then, are you able to show me any white hat that totally sparkles?

This recent blizzard has us staying here a day or two longer than expected. We could, probably, leave in relative safety but once we got home, we'd be stuck. Our driveway has snow drifts to the tops of fence posts...again..., Cove Road is impassable save for tractors and our farm sitter says, "stay where it's safe and warm". So, here we sit. Hopefully, I'll be able to swim in the heated, indoor pool, perhaps take in a movie in the theatre and, definitely, walk around and take more photos. What a terrific place to recuperate!

Until next time,

Blessings ~ good health ~ the Greenbrier ~ warm and cozy ~ farm sitter ~ a temple that's functioning well and happy ~

Thanks for visiting Thistle Cove Farm,

When I Grow Up...

I want to be an old woman. -click to view you tube video.

By the way, Paula won a pair of rug mugs...err, make that mug rugs... but left no way for me to contact her. If you'd like them, please leave a comment and random.org will choose someone by Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. I'll try and mail them Wednesday afternoon barring snow storms preventing me from getting to town.

Re posting - I've decided to try and make a few entries at a time and then have them posted regardless of my weather situation. When we've severe cloud coverage or storms, we don't have internet connections. Fortunately, we have lots of audio books, printed books and there's always the spinning wheel, quilting and weaving looms, knitting needles and sewing machines to keep me busy! In severe weather, chores take up huge amounts of my day; just getting to the barn takes a lot of time as I have to break snow drifts so we can all walk, somewhat, freely. When I return to the house, I spend a while, sometimes a couple of hours, simply recovering. You know what they say: old age ain't for sissies! And my response...it's better than the alternative!

All that to say, if you e-mail me and I don't respond...no i-net. Be patient and I'll get to you, sometime or other -smile-.

Busy Week Ahead

Good Morning! The fog is beginning to burn off and the sun is streaming behind the trees in the lower pasture. It's beautiful but I have to be vigilant about branches falling off and leaves wilting. I believe the leaves make a form of prussic acid which can kill livestock. The trees are allowed to live because of the shade they provide as well as the back scratching material -smile-.
Let me apologize...for some reason my posts were underlined, very annoying, but I couldn't figure out what I did to cause this. Now, some sentences aren't underlined but there's is No Way I'm going to re-do this post. I know this is annoying to you; it's annoying to me but I can live with it. When you finish reading this entry, you'll understand why. Simply too much to do in the daylight I've got today; so what's new, eh? -smile-

If you know why my post was underlined and, more importantly, how to prevent it next time, please don't keep it a secret! Tell all, tell all...
See these little fawn triplets alongside the road? This worries me; where is their mother? I dare not consider...

As we passed, they bounded into the underbrush but I caught a glimpse of this little one as s/he left the side of the road. I always make a lot of noise to, hopefully, frighten them away from the road. People think of me as a crazy woman...honking the horn, yelling, waving stuff out the window...but if it helps these little ones grow to adulthood, it's well worth being thought of as crazy.

It's a busy week at Thistle Cove Farm. I'm in the studio this week, getting ready to demonstrate the fiber and textile arts at The Highlands Festival in Abin
gdon. Thursday will be a Very Long Day and, for the first time in a long time, I'll have to pack a lunch and water as I'll be glued to my spinning chair all day. I'm not a fan of festival food as it doesn't like me much either. I'll take my spinning wheel, rag rug loom, roving to spin and roving to sell, some fleeces and yarn. Hopefully, my small antique fan will keep the faith and work all day long. My pioneer dress gets a bit warm so a fan will be helpful.

So, does this picture look better with, or without, Sadie Lady? Not bad either way, eh? -smile-This morning Sadie Lady sat as I wandered around the studio, taking photos. She's looking at kittens and cat, wondering if she dare, DARE, chase them? NO, Sadie Lady, the answer is NO! At four months old, her body is beginning to look like a dog but her mind is still Pure Puppy!

****************** Miss Emma says, "Why should a DOG get attention? I wanted to add my own special touch so I walked across the keyboard and put in stars..."
Thank you, Miss Emma. Now the blog looks SO much better!

I've joined our local YMCA, newly opened, and am taking Zumba and yoga classes. Sometimes, I take water aerobics but enjoy Zumba and yoga a tad better. I don't enjoy the Zumba music though, it's a bit vulgar for my tastes but then, I don't listen to pop music. I prefer Celtic, jazz, blues if I'm going to listen to secular music and this pop music is, in a word, Awful. No wonder people's minds are full of nonsense. Oh, the music is great for jumping around and getting the heart rate going but it does make me blush! Some of it, I'm ot even sure what they mean and I'm not sure I want to know. I do know my blood pressure was 118/80 when I got home yesterday; that was after two hours of exercise. I find when I stretch before and after exercising and then when I get up in the morning my body responds in a positive fashion. I feel much better, my posture is much better and my attitude is better. Generally, I have a good attitude anyway and those increased endorphens just add to the joy.

Now, as I'm typing this, Miss Emma is draped across my shoulders, supported also by the back of the sofa and she's playing in my hair. She and the other kittens received their vaccinations on Friday and not a moment too soon! Miss Emma has a cold and is on meds; she seems to be a bit better ...at least if her antics this morning are any indication. I just wish her nasty little cough would heal.

Are you among those who are C. S. Lewis fans? Are you also aware he was a member of the Inklings? There were a small group of thinkers and writers who, IMO, re-defined Christian writing. Dorothy Sayers and J.R.R. Tolkien were both members although I've read Sayers was an unofficial member due to her gender, and it's due to a challenge from Tolkien that Lewis wrote the Chronicles of Narnia. Tolkien's most famous books is the Lord of the Rings series and my favorite of Sayers are the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. Hugh Laurie, the actor who plays Dr. House, is the actor who played Lord Peter Wimsey whom I enjoyed far more than the House character.

By the way, Voyage of the Dawn Trader is in production. I love the Narnia books and movies and think the Potter series pales in comparison. Oh, don't get me wrong...Potter is good but Narnia is GREAT! Potter engages the eyes and Narnia engages the mind but then, I've always been a person for whom the mind being engaged was far superior to the eyes being engaged. Isn't imagination a wonderful thing? When children, or adults, don't have an active positive imagination, they just aren't living full lives, don't you think? A person with an active imagination is never bored because the pictures and story are being played out in the mind. If you disagree on the Narnia Potter discussion, that's okay too and I'd like to hear why you prefer Potter to Narnia. -smile-

As to Dorothy L. Sayers...she's an interesting person. She
, as Lewis and Tolkien, was associated with Oxford and advocated a classical education, as do I even though my "classical education" was on the waning moon. She wrote a compelling argument for same entitled The Lost Tools of Learning. She also wrote a definitive translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. In this, her last work, she looks deeply at The Seven Deadly Sins and the medieval concept of those sins.

All this, the above post, is because of Sunday's Sabbath Keeping quotes of C. S. Lewis. Every so often, I re-read Lewis and others of his time and enjoy
them all over again. Just like the Bible...King James Version, ta very much!...there's always something new to fix upon, to ponder and reflect upon. Dave has begun downloading some of my favorite authors onto my MP3 player so I now have audio books no matter where I go...studio, automobile, home...it doesn't matter where because I have headphones or speakers that will play the MP3. So much FUN to listen to authors who amuse me, entertain me, make me think and, hopefully, make me a better writer. There's a certain turn of phrase that's sorely lacking in today's writings. A lot of books today are so vulgar...there's that word again...tawdry, unimaginative, boring, even. I find myself returning, again and again, to the familiar, the safe, the cozy that still manage to stretch me in various ways.

What about you; what books do you enjoy listening to or reading?

The studio in the morning light with Sam intently studying the cat and kittens. "No, Sam", do Not Even Think of chasing them!

The west side of the studio with bird feeders and flowers in window box.

I think my little bird door knocker is so sweet and it looks like the Christmas cactus is getting ready to bloom!St. Francis watches over the flowers and has either water or bird seed in his container. I love the sweet look on his face. Do you remember the movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon. I loved that movie, wish I could find it for $5 at Wal-Mart -smile- and think it was one of Director Franco Zeffirelli's best, certainly one of my favorites. I'm sure if I saw it today, it might not be as great as my memory says but I'm sure I'd still like it.

The Chinese symbol for harmony with the pencil cactus hanging beside.I enjoy picking wild flowers and then putting them into this old blue enamel coffee pot. The lid long gone, the pot is still wonderful as a flower container and looks so nice sitting upon the little green table. That little table used to be white but white was too brash and stood out when I wanted it to blend. Uh Oh. Christian lesson there, I'd wager to say!

The studio is getting some serious time this week as well as for the remainder of the month. I've several quilts to finish, some textile post cards to make and scarves/shawls to sew. I enjoy finding beautiful material and making shawls/scarves. A couple of spinning wheels are out there so I can always take a whirl when my fingers are weary of sewing on my antique sewing machines. When I'm caught up, I'll take you into the studio for a visit and will also post my bread recipes.

Banana walnut bread is in the oven, coffee and tea pots are full and hot, dogs asleep at my feet, Miss Emma in a sunbeam...Ahhhh...this is the Moment!

Blessings ~ a good read ~ a good listen ~ great authors ~ ability to download ~ exercise ~ good health ~ festivals ~ banana walnut bread ~ puppies, kittens, dogs and cats ~ always thankful to God for giving me little ways to keep me humble! ~ YOU~

A Full Day

These old Appalachian Mountains are supposed to be some of the oldest on earth; perhaps so but I do know they are among the most beautiful!

Our mornings are foggy and the mist hangs heavy in the air. I enjoy these mornings just as I enjoy all other mornings at Thistle Cove Farm. Each are special and beautiful and a reminder of God's overwhelming love, grace and mercy.

A lone pigeon watches over the feeder. I think it's going to be a hard winter; I'm filling the bird feeders once a day although they would like it to be more frequent. I enjoy feeding the birds, watching them and listening to their song. It soothes me and brings great joy to my day and life.
Looking back toward the house you can see the fog hanging heavy. It's a beautiful time, when the fog is heavy. There's a peaceful holiness and everything is so quiet you can hear the Earth sigh as she draws her blanket of wet close 'round her.
This deer was in the road, undecided which way to go. I stopped the car and waited until his mind was made up and he bounded up the hillside. Usually, deer travel in pairs or groups but I saw no other deer, just this solitary deer as he went about his business.I made the most wonderful brown molasses bread with dried cranberries. It's really tasty especially with some Philly cream cheese! If anyone is interested, I'll give the recipe later this week. It's a quick bread, takes about ten minutes to make and another thirty or so to bake. I've eaten it for breakfast, lunch and as a snack and it seems to taste even better as it ages.
Early evening saw us at the County Courthouse listening to representatives from Americans For Prosperity and The Social Security Institute discuss "Obamacare".

It was extremely interesting, doubly so because the key note speaker, Lawrence A. Hunter, Ph.D. has worked with several administrations including Regan and Clinton and has a non-partisan viewpoint that is refreshingly clear and was able to succinctly explain why, in his opinion, the proposed "Obamacare" is wrong for the USA.

He's one of the few speakers I've ever heard who was able to get his point across, stick to his topics and all in a matter of a few minutes AND without bashing. He's made his entire presentation without letting it be known if he was Democrat or Republican and, truthfully, I didn't really care. What I do care about are the issues and the clear presentation of same. Thank you, Dr. Hunter, for being a clear and succinct speaker.

The Americans For Prosperity is an organization "...committed to educating citizens about economic policy... and whose members advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint." The Americans For Prosperity Foundation "is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and a return of the federal government to its Constitional limits."

Well! I'm all for that as a small acreage farmer; iow, an entrepreneur, I am totally against government intervention in my life and business. I believe the job of government is to govern and not to become intrusive in the lives of citizens; and, for one thing, not dictate to me how I should and when I should die.

I have several problems with the proposed Obamacare and the primary problem is why are the President, Congress and Senate exempting themselves from this proposed health care system? If it's so wonderful for the rest of us, why aren't they buying into it? I find that disturbing and raises questions that, thus far, no one will answer. That's even more frightening because when no answers are given, the thoughts one chases might be even worse than the answers.

Another problem I have is the dictate that Everyone age 65 and older MUST have "end of life counseling" with a "certified government practitioner" for "end of life options". WHAT THE...??? Again, the lack of answers to specific questions such as, "Please tell me exactly what that really means" is highly disturbing and leads me to thoughts of "assisted euthanasia" as opposed to expensive medical care for the elder. HEY! I'm fast becoming one of the "elder" and I don't like what I'm hearing...or not as the case may be!

All in all, the 1,000 page document reads like 1984 only a few years later. Uncle Sam is now Big Brother as well and in the Commonwealth of VA incest is against the law but I suppose federal supercedes state law, eh?
The crowd was, overwhelming, seniors. The only "young folks" where those who came with the speaker or the lone teenage girl who was there with her reporter mother. Here, people sign petitions and they hope to have 10,000 names to take to representatives and Senators in Virginia.
Dr. Hunter addresses the crowd and then gave time for questions and answers.

These two groups are traveling across the country in a red bus and a blue bus. Their aim is to educate people on just what the Obamacare program means in black and white and, let me tell you, from what I heard and, now from what I've researched, it's not pretty and it's also not safe for the majority of people living in the USA. The vast majority of USA citizenry are now age 60 and above and at a time when a lot of folks think they can retire and enjoy the benefits of a life well lived and worked...think again. It's just not going to happen if this "health care" plan is passed.

Please feel free to check the sites above and form your own opinion. I've also got a "cheat sheet" of facts on the 1,000 page document where one and two-sentence explanations are given about every page and/or section. If you want, I'm happy to forward it to you especially if "you're of an age...".
The view above looks toward Rt 91, aka Maiden Springs Road.

Do not be deceived as were the local "experts" who declared Maiden Spring to be plural. Where they got that idea is still a mystery to me. There's only one Maiden Spring so that makes it singular; at least it did when I went to school.

We live on Cove Road, a hard surface road of a bit over two miles then the dirt road begins.
Our road had macadam applied in the late 1960's, or so I've been told. It's a beautiful view and, in the past, when I had dogs and not puppies -smile- we would walk the road but only a mile or so. Our neighbor puts out coyote snares and I'd rather not have to rescue the dogs from one of those nasty things. They are a necessary evil and if you don't think so, then you've never seen a lamb in death throes from having its kidney ripped out by a coyote. Coyotes are not native to this region, having been brought here in the late 1950's as a deterrent to "pest animal control". I've never really been sure what that means but, perhaps, one day someone who knows will tell me.

This view is toward the head of the Cove where it dead ends in about 5,000 acres that was deeded to the Nature Conservancy.
The day ended with this beautiful rainbow, then double rainbow, where both began and ended in our pastures!

I've never seen a double rainbow begin and end in our pastures, always in our valley. It was beautiful and I'm reminded of the promise God made to Noah in Genesis 9:11 "And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth." God set the rainbow in the clouds as a promise to Noah and to following generations. And think, today I've seen a double rainbow! What a wonderful gift, thank you, God.
As always, may the Good Lord take a liking to you...but not too soon!
