Sabbath Keeping

 ~ ...you are covered... ~
"Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." ~ Exodus 10:8 ~

"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day." ~ Hebrews 10:25 ~

"I think of my life and the lives of everyone...as not just journeys through time
but as sacred journeys."  ~ Frederick Buechner ~

"Church attendance is as vital to a disciple as a transfusion of rich,
healthy blood to a sick man."  ~ Dwight L. Moody ~

"Listen to your life. Pay attention to what happens to you."

"I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You."
          ~ Psalm 22:22 ~

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
~ Romans 10:17 ~

"It is just where God seems most helpless that He is most strong; and just where we least expect Him that He comes most fully." ~ Frederick Buechner ~

"Lewis was once asked, "Is attendance at a place of worship or membership with a Christian community necessary to a Christian way of life?"

His answer:

"That's a question which I cannot answer. My own experience is that when I first became a Christian, about fourteen years ago, I thought that I could do it on my own, by retiring to my rooms and reading theology, and I wouldn't go to the churches and Gospel Halls; and then later I found that it was the only way of flying your flag; and, of course, I found that this meant being a target. It is extraordinary how inconvenient to your family it becomes for you to get up early to go to Church. It doesn't matter so much if you get up early for anything else, but if you get up early to go to Church it's very selfish of you and you upset the house.

If there is anything in the teaching of the New Testament which is in the nature of a command, it is that you are obliged to take the Sacrament, and you can't do it without going to Church. I disliked very much their hymns, which I considered to be fifth-rate poems set to sixth-rate music. But as I went on I saw the great merit of it. I came up against different people of quite different outlooks and different education, and then gradually my conceit just began peeling off.
I realized that the hymns (which were just sixth-rate music) were, nevertheless, being sung with devotion and benefit by an old saint in elastic-side boots in the opposite pew, and then you realize that you aren't fit to clean those boots. It gets you out of your solitary conceit."
~ C. S. Lewis, God in the Dock, pp. 61-62 ~

"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."
~ I John 1:7 ~

  2. Sometimes we all get discouraged with church attendance: maybe I should just speak for myself, but sometimes....it would just feel so good to stay in bed, or just read, or whatever.

But, everytime I go, I am NOT sorry that I went. IT's good for us, and it is what we NEED....not always something that feels good. Sometimes the sermon is stirring, makes us mad, or makes us glad...any way we can get it, our souls need His Word!

    Love your posts, Sandra!

A great post Sandra. Reminds me of that hymn we usually only sing at Thanksgiving "We Gather Together."

  5. I always feel hugged by your Sabbath Keeping posts. They have become as much a part of my Sundays as heels and a skirt (being the pastor's wife and all...)

This Sabbath Keeping's hug was long and tender and heartfelt, and just the encouragement I needed right now.

So, HUGS back at ya, Sandra. Be blessed in your every endeavor this week.
