Sabbath Keeping

"So rend your heart, and not your garments;
Return to the LORD your God for He is gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And relents from doing harm."
~ Joel 2:13 ~

An Old English Nun's Prayer
...also known as Sandra's Prayer...

LORD,

Thou knowest better than I know myself that
I am growing older and will someday be old.
Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something
on every subject and on every occasion.
Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs.
Make me thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy.
With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all,
but Thou knowest Lord that I want a few friends at the end.
Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details;
give me wings to get to the point.
Seal my lips on my aches and pains.
They are increasing and love of rehearsing them
is becoming sweeter as the years go by.  I
 dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others' pains,
but help me to endure them with patience.
I dare not ask for improved memory
but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness
when my memory seems to clash with the memory of others.
Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken.
Make me reasonably sweet;
I do not want to be a Saint - some of them are so hard to live with -
but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil.
Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and
talents in unexpected people.
And give me Oh Lord the grace to tell them so.
Amen.

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we have seen his glory,
glory as of the only Son from the Father,
full of grace and truth."
~ John 1:14

If you'd like your name added to the prayer list, please let me know. Names will be kept for one month, unless requested otherwise. Around the world, people are praying.

  4. I love that prayer! And thanks for the prayers for my dad. The tests didn't show any metastasis, so his cancer is serious, but treatable. Continued prayers appreciated, especially while they try to decide on the best treatment option(s).

  6. I'm copying the prayer in my prayer journal. I can see places I need to pray with Sandra. I giggled at, "With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all..."

  17. Please could you add Claudie to the prayer list? She is the sister of one of my students, who has been in an induced coma for acute organ failure. She is now out of the coma, but in ICU on constant dialysis and needing physio to clear her lungs. There is a fear of some brain damage too. It sounds almost too much for one person to bear. Thank you.
